DAY 1 - DRIVE TO CACHORA AND TREK TO CHIQUISCA

The first day of this exhilarating itinerary takes us first to the pretty village of Cachora. We leave Cusco early in our private transport to meet our trek crew at our starting point. Cachora is a comfortable 4 hour drive west of Cusco traveling through some beautiful countryside out into the rural district of Apurimac.

Once heading out on the trail, we’ll get a good sense of our expedition. Incredible mountain ranges and glaciers come into sight, building our anticipation for this challenging trek. A few hours in brings us to our first mountain pass and the beginning of today’s long descent.
 
From this viewpoint, with a clear sky, we will catch a glimpse the magnificent Choquequirao.
The downhill is very steep, quite unforgiving and can be painful for our knees (if you have knee problems we suggest “knee braces” or supports).
Chiquiska is our camp tonight almost at the bottom of the Apurimac River canyon . . A little piece of paradise, this green oasis is a welcoming, restful place. Please note, as we are lower and near the Apurimac river a strong mosquito repellent is essential. 
A fulfilling dinner and early to bed is the order of the day, ready for our demanding climb tomorrow!

DAY 1 - CUSCO TO CALCA TO QUISHUARANI TO CUNCANI

Very early, as the sun begins to shine, our guide will pick us up from the hotel and we will head in the direction of the Sacred Valley. The Calca market will be our last stop before losing contact with big cities. This is our final chance to buy any last minute things we may need for the trip. The road that leads to Lares and crosses the Amparaes pass at 4470m is a phenomenal drive which winds through arid landscapes, occasional rivers run across the road and the mountain views are breathtaking.

Our final destination is the beautiful traditional village of Quishuarani, (3,700 m/12,140 ft) colorful, and full of breath-taking landscapes. You will start hiking from here, gradually ascending to our first mountain pass Hualcacasa (4,400 m/14,440 ft), about 3-4 hours after reaching this pass you will take a break to enjoy the views of the lagoons that appear suddenly from behind giant mountains capped by glaciers and llamas and alpacas graze the surrounding hills.

Then you will descend to Cuncani Village (3,750 m/12,300 ft). Where yo can jump in our vehicle to drive for few Kilometers down to Lares Hot Springs, our campsite for tonight.Walking distance approximately 14km/8.7mi (6-7 hours)If you love hiking you can continue walking down to Lares Hot Springs.

DAY 1 - FLIGHT TO NORTHERN PERU & SCENIC DRIVE TO MILPUJ

Our trip starts with your arrival in Chachapoyas, where we will pick you up directly from the airport. From there, we begin a scenic drive toward Milpuj, passing through lush cloud forests and winding mountain roads with beautiful views of the Utcubamba River valley. If time allows, we can also visit the women potters of Huancas and enjoy a short afternoon of traditional pottery demonstration — a lovely first encounter with the culture and landscapes of northern Peru.

We’ll then continue to Milpuj, where we’ll drive to La Casa de Doña Lola, our cozy homestay for the night. It’s the perfect place to relax, slow down, and feel at home after our journey.

If there are no available flights to Chachapoyas, arrival will be via Tarapoto. In this case, the drive is longer (approximately 6–7 hours), but it is a fascinating journey, transitioning from the Amazon’s tropical warmth to the cooler Andean highlands, passing through vibrant jungle landscapes and picturesque foothills.
Either way, it’s an adventure that sets the tone for the days ahead!

The steep descent will take 3 to 4 hours to the lowest point of the canyon, the Apurimac River, a fairly relentless and technical descent. After crossing the Apurimac river bridge, we begin our ascent to our first campsite, Santa Rosa (2095m), where we will spend the night.

On our way to Urubamba, we will stop at Pisac to spend some time walking around its unique and artisanal market, where we can appreciate or buy the different crafts that are handmade in this town.

After Pisac's wonders, enjoy lunch at Hacienda Huayoccari. Explore the on-site museum in a stunning landscape for a memorable experience. From Cusco, we take an early morning drive in our private transport to Capuliyoc, our entrance to the Apurimac canyon. Once on the trail, the mountain range and glaciers in view will amaze and delight, providing strong motivation for this challenging trek. After a few hours, we will reach the mountain pass and begin our long downhill journey for the day.

From this vantage point, if we have a clear sky, we will see our final destination from afar—the magnificent Choquequirao. The Salineras have been in continuous operation since pre-Inca times. Marvel at the ingenuity and practicality of the terrace system, as you are mesmerized by the simple beauty and brilliance of these pinkish-white salt pans; it is a site to behold.
After a wonderful and tasty picnic lunch, we will visit the circular Inca ruins of Moray, an extraordinary experimental agricultural site. Four natural crater-like depressions are lined with a series of concentric circular terraces that get smaller as they disappear into the earth. Next, we’ll delve into the fascinating world of guinea pig farming and its role in the local economy, followed by a visit to a traditional corn beer brewery (chichería), where we’ll learn how “chicha de jora” (corn beer) is made. We’ll enjoy a taste of the drink, accompanied by a traditional snack called “picante.”

DAY 2 - SANTA ROSA  TO CHOQUEQUIRAO

After our first night on the trail and a breakfast of champions,  we´ll continue our ascent from the magnificent Apurímac Canyon with a steep zigzag climb, for 3 hours to Marampata (2940 m).

On reaching Marampata we will get a ‘birds eye view’ of the impressive and powerful Apurimac river. The hike from here is flatter than our challenging uphill . This is the lower sector of the archaeological complex, where we will see ancient Inca water channels, ceremonial rocks and much more. 
 
After a hard day of hiking, we will return to our camp to enjoy a delicious meal and a well-deserved rest.
